The wind vector is the average wind over the relevant period. Note that if the wind blows North for half the time at 2 knots, and then blows South for the other half of the time at 2 knots, then the result is zero -- i.e. North wind and South wind will cancel out. Over time, the direction of the wind and of the analysis should match pretty well.
